In the s, mankind begins to terraform the planet Mars. Giant corporations, sponsored by the World Government on Earth, initiate huge projects to raise the temperature, the oxygen level, and the ocean coverage until the environment is habitable. In Terraforming Mars, you play one of those corporations and work together in the terraforming process, but compete for getting victory points that are awarded not only for your contribution to the terraforming, but also for advancing human. Scientists themselves have proposed terraforming to enable the long-term colonization of Mars. A solution common to both groups is to release carbon dioxide gas trapped in the Martian surface to thicken the atmosphere and act as a blanket to warm the planet. Terraforming Mars: A four-sided game review. Terraforming Mars is a tableau-building, engine building card and board game for one to five players. While a solo game can be done in an hour, more will mean two to three hours (so if you want to play with five people, you’re in for the long haul). The 12+ age rating is justified, as there is a lot of symbology and writing on the cards and it has a long play time – but the mechanisms are pretty straightforward (no more than medium gamer. Terraforming Mars is a tableau-building, resource management game for players that takes about minutes to play. Terraforming Mars plays best with three players. Game Overview: Each player controls a corporation interested in transforming Mars so that large numbers of humans can thrive in residence.
Place the tile, and place a player marker on it. Resource cubes: Resources are collected on the player board or on specific cards.
There are many types of resources, but they are all marked by these cubes:. Player markers: Each player uses his own color to mark TR, ownership of tiles, production, and to indicate the used blue card actions.
Temperature, oxygen, and generation markers: Start at the beginning of the respective track. First player marker: Shifts clockwise each generation.
The player board keeps track of your current resources and production. Resource cubes are placed in their respective boxes, and player markers are used on the production tracks.
In the game, resource icons refer to resource cubes, while resource icons inside brown boxes refer to the production of that resource see the project card below.
Production is not limited to Example: If you play a card that increases your heat production 3 steps from 19 to 22 you mark this by having 2 player markers on '10' and 1 marker on '2' on the production track above the heat box.
All leftover energy is converted into heat at the beginning of the production phase. Each player starts the game with a corporation card. During the game, players buy and play many project cards to get benefits of different kinds.
The cards are divided into active cards blue frame, see example , automated cards green and event cards red.
Some corporations also have a fixed first action described here see example card. Actions may be used only once per generation, while effects are always active.
To get cards into your hand, you must first buy them during the research phase. Some cards require a global parameter to have reached a certain level, while others can only be played while the parameter is still low see example card.
Some cards require that you have certain tags or production. Note: In order to play the card you must also be able to perform the effects of the card.
Note also that the requirement only needs to be fulfilled when playing the card, not when you use it later.
You may also get tiles to place, or other effects. This describes the setup for the standard game for players. See additional rules for other game variants.
Game board: Place the game board centrally on the table. Place the 9 ocean tiles in their reserved space.
Place the temperature and oxygen markers in their starting positions. Also, place the generation marker on '1' on the TR track.
Project deck: Make sure you have no Corporate Era cards in the project deck or among the corporation cards. These are marked with a red and white icon in the lower left edge.
Shuffle the project cards and place the project deck next to the board. Leave space for a discard pile beside it. Players: The player who most recently won a game of Terraforming Mars is given the first player marker.
Players choose their colors and take the corresponding player markers and a player board. You start with 1 production of each resource on the player board, so place player markers on the tracks only in a standard game.
Each player also places one marker at the starting position 20 of the TR track. Corporation cards: Players new to Terraforming Mars each get a Beginner Corporation card colorless card back and follow its instruction to get 42 MegaCredits and draw 10 project cards to form their starting hand.
Then they can examine their cards while experienced players continue this setup without them. Shuffle the 10 standard corporation cards excluding the 2 Corporate Era corporations and deal 2 to each remaining player.
Project cards: Deal 10 cards to each remaining player. Now the players examine their options for their starting hand and corporation. Starting conditions: Players choose which of the corporations they want to play, and which of the 10 project cards they want to keep for their starting hand.
The cards not kept are discarded put discarded corporations back in the box - cards are always discarded face down! Be aware that your resources for the following few generations will be quite limited until you get your economy going.
Start the game: The first generation starts without a player order phase and without a research phase since you just performed those phases during setup , so the first player just starts the action phase.
Because of the long time spans needed for the projects, this game is played in a series of generations. Each generation the players go through 4 phases.
The first player marker shifts 1 step clockwise and the generation marker is moved up 1 step. This phase is skipped in the first generation see setup.
Each player draws 4 cards and decides which of them he wants to buy to his hand. The rest of the 4 drawn cards are discarded face down on the discard pile.
Example: In the second generation, the players have their first normal research phase. Terraforming Mars: Venus-Acryl-Marker.

The taming of the Red Planet has begun! Corporations are competing to transform Mars into a habitable planet by spending vast resources and using innovative technology to raise temperature, create a breathable atmosphere, and make oceans of water.
Recent Reviews:. All Reviews:. Asmodee Digital. Popular user-defined tags for this product:. This is a collaboratively competitive game, which means all players are working towards a common goal, the terraforming of Mars.
However, only one winner will prevail at the end of it. Every player represents a different corporation, and this is where the game really shines.
Every corporation has a unique strength that informs the strategies it may best apply towards winning. The beauty is you don't have to follow any specific path towards victory, and that is what makes a good game to me.
Many of my friends have commented that they are already looking forward to playing it again before our current session is even complete.
There are so many potential synergies here that it can take a few plays just to start to get the hang of the opportunities at your disposal.
I would recommend this without reservation. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Translate all reviews to English.
Das Spiel dauert jeweils grob Stunden und erfodert viel Kopfrechnen und vorrausplanen. Easy to play, hard to master. Das Kartenmaterial ist ziemlich billig.
Viel billiger produziert geht kaum. Wer komplexe Spiele wie Agricola und Puerto Rico gerne mag, dem kann ich trotzdem nur dazu raten sich Terraforming Mars incl Venus Erweiterung zu besorgen.
Translate review to English. A great game with many hours of playability. Report abuse. The game in itself is not bad, but the quality of the components is poor to say at least.
We have games that were considerably cheaper, with more elements and all of them at the highest quality. First of all, I want to tell everyone that I received the original version.
The one I have is not a fake or copy. I contacted Stronghold Games before placing the order, and they mentioned that they have a "transparency sticker" on the Terraforming Mars sold by Amazon Canada.
I wasn't sure what to expect. Today I received the game and on the plastic seal of the box there is a small sticker which you can scan with the Transparency App to confirm the authenticity.
It gave me all the details, including the fact that this box was produced in Germany. This was a big relive as I had read reviews about fake copies from China going around.
The game is not easy -- the manual is 15 pages. However, I think it's a good challenge which will make the game even more interesting I purchased it after recommendations from several friends.
The cardboard material feels lighter than I would expect, but at the end there is so much material in the box of Terraforming Mars, that the entire box was heavy.
Very heavy. Heavier than my other board games. So it makes sense to me that some of the material is lighter, otherwise this won't be a nice box to grab and move when you wish to play it.
Graphics on cardboard items and cards are excellent. As someone has mentioned, the cards are quite thin not too thin, mind me, but thinner than other board games.
However, once again, there are over cards. Those are two quite tall piles of cards already. Heaving them heavier or thicker may have not helped the enjoyment of the game.
The cubes. All the cubes have a cut-mark in one of the corners, I assume due to the fabrication process. The semi-transparent cubes are very similar to the cubes from Pandemic.
In these semi-transparent cubes the cut is barely visible. Additionally, in my set there is only one cube one blue cube which has an air bubble in it.
The small metallic copper cubes are good. The small metallic silver cubes look "fair", but it seems that grinding on each other some metallic cover is coming off from them.
The big metallic gold cubes are good but not perfect. One has some little dots barely noticeable tho.
Some seem a bit more orange-gold and others more yellow-gold. Others seems to shift the color in the cube between those two.
But once again, barely noticeable unless you have OCD and a focused attention to details. Overall I am happy about this game, and I am looking forward to spending the next days at home playing it.
The copy I received was a counterfeit copy. I'm not sure if all of Amazon's are, but its definitely something to be cautious about. From what I understand the easiest way to tell is that the production quality overall is down cards seem especially flimsy and the board doesn't fold quite properly and the player boards will be held with a piece of cardboard instead of plastic wrap when you first open it.
Having said that, having played the game before, it is one of the best games I've played and I wholeheartedly recommend it.
Little bit complicated at first with a lot going on but after a few playthroughs it starts to make sense. More items to explore. Only 4 left in stock - order soon.
